Why is there No Oil on my Dipstick

Now, look at your dipstick once again. If you observe more than half a quart of oil on the stick between maximum and minimum, you have too much oil. Oil may be added to get your level back to standard.

However, suppose there is no oil on it. In that case, your level is below the minimum. 

This is, of course, after assuming that you have previously validated that this was at the minimum. You can measure it with a warm engine (and fluid) temperature. 

Continue to add until you reach a level between the minimum and maximum on the dipstick.

You should check the fluid level numerous times before changing your oil, even if it is not due for an oil change. Then, you can wait until the thermostat opens before monitoring the fluid levels if the engine has been parked for a lengthy period.
