A bed is the center of a bedroom, the central and most important part of it. Here we spend our time reading a book, rest, sleep, and communicate with a beloved one. It is essential that the bed is reliable, has a pleasant look, and harmoniously fits your interior. Furniture stores offer a variety of options, but most often, the price is higher than the quality. Why overpay when you can do it yourself?
Making a bed frame with your own hands is much easier than it seems. Besides, a homemade bed has several advantages:
- Independent choosing of high-quality materials;
- Confidence in construction reliability;
- Acquisition of useful household skills;
- Creative opportunities.
Having crafted a DIY bed frame, you receive an exclusive product in a single copy, and it’s in your power to make it unique.
Table of Contents:
Decide on the size of the frame you want to make. Choose a mattress that suits you in all respects. According to this FAQ resource, the right mattress is an expensive purchase, but the quality of sleep and rest depends on it. A bad mattress can cause circulatory and back problems. So be extremely careful when choosing it.
Try to choose orthopedic mattresses. For a comfortable sleep, choose mattresses 6-7″ longer than your height. When the choice is made, check the dimensions and create a schematic plan of the future sleeping place based on them.
Be sure to make allowances so that the mattress can fit into the frame, not lay on it like a cover.
Mattress dimensions + 0.5″ per side = bed frame dimensions.
We will make a frame for a standard mattress 78.7″ x 51.2″.
It is essential to define the height of the legs – try to imagine the most acceptable level for you to get up. The bed should not be too low and too high (although in modern interiors non-standard furniture shapes are welcomed). Leave enough room for built-in drawers under the bed if you plan to store stuff there. Consider in advance what size and shape the backrest is going to have.
Making a bed frame along with decorating it will not take more than a week, and a new bed will please you for many years.
There’s plenty of wood of different qualities in various stores. Try to find the smoothest boards without any knots or holes – a large amount of knocked out wood will take quite a long time to grind. To avoid a bed “running into bucks”, you need to select materials based on their function in the frame manufacturing process.
For frame and decor, take the highest-quality woo. It can be expensive but is reliable and easy to handle. Medium-priced and high-quality wood is suitable for the legs and the boards (needed for the grid holding the mattress) opt for the simplest option. We will use pine boards as a highly eco-friendly and durable material.
Some craftsmen use chipboard to replace boards because it can be tempting with its price. However, a bed with such material will not serve you as long as the one made of solid wood.
So, when at the store, choose the following using a tape measure:
Dimensions Quantity Assignment
80″ x 10″ x 0.8″ 2 Sidewalls
51″ x 10″ x 0.8″ 3 End faces
78.7″ x 1.6″ x 0.8″ 5 Longitudinal bar, supporting for medium bearing
51.2″ x 1.6″ x 0.8″ 30 Boards
Coating materials (insect repellents: stain, varnish)
The height of the legs is essential, so determine the best level for you to get up comfortably.
Tools you need
A specific set of tools is required to make a DIY bed frame. The list is impressive, but the acquisitions will serve you for many years and help create other things besides the bed:
- Electric planer
- Electric saw
- Hand saw
- Electric screwdriver + bits (8/10);
- Metal ruler
- Laser level
That’s where the blueprint comes in. Measure the required parameters, mark the cutting lines with a pencil. Use a ruler and cutter to make the cut. When the workpieces are entirely in line with your pattern, start processing.
Remove all knots and jams with sandpaper. It is better to have several types of the latter (coarse, medium, and fine grains). Start smoothing the surface with coarse sandpaper, then move on to fine.
End boards and headboards are stripped with an electric planer – this helps make a completely flat surface and straighten the lines.
Assembly and installation
Move away from the edges of the end walls by approx. 4.3″ to ensure that the mattress is positioned correctly (when calculating the mattress depth of approx. 2″ – a horizontal line). Mark one side of the end boards and the other side of the end boards – move one-third of the distance from each side – vertical lines.
The intersection points of the two lines are the points where support bars are attached.
The bed headboard is ample space for creativity.
Measure 2.8″ from the top of the board on the sidewalls of the frame. Use the laser level to draw parallel lines on them – that’s where the bars along each of the sides of the board will be located. Move back 0.8″ from the ends and fasten them.
To maintain the aesthetics of the bed frame, use screws that do not exceed the thickness of the boards. Screw them in from the inside.
Take the future headboard of the bed and attach it from the end of the bed using the boards (3 pcs).
Check all joints and corners for looseness before finally securing the structure.
Remove dust from the frame elements. Use dry cloth – wet cloth can damage the grinding process. Unevenness on the laths can damage mattress fabric.
Use a stain to coat the frame elements. Then apply two layers of lacquer. I recommend using a polyurethane-based finish as it is less toxic and more wear-resistant. The transparent polyurethane-based varnish is self-leveling, which makes it easier to apply. Wait for it to dry.
Secure all the walls of your bed frame.
Place medium-sized load-bearing bars on support bars (which you have attached to the end boards).
Start smoothing the surface with coarse sandpaper, then move on to a fine one.
Self-tapping screws should be used to bind the elements.
The frame is ready. Now you need to stack the boards. Choose the segments of the gaps between them so that the mattress can be easily held. Connect the boards with the longitudinal bars.
Next, come the legs. In the inner side of the corners of the frame, fix the bars with the dimensions of 1.6″ x 1.6″. If desired, you can make a pair of support legs in the middle to make sure that the bed is securely assembled. Consider the amount of space under the bed and whether or not there are cupboards or boxes that can be stored there – all this affects the height of the legs. Sometimes you don’t have to fix the legs at all if the height of the frame and interior allow it.
Measure the necessary parameters, mark the sawing lines with a pencil.
The easiest way to make a bed look attractive was shown to you in the algorithm of work on the frame – a stain and varnish retain a color of bars, making it brighter. Lacquer can be matt – dust and scratches will be less visible. A glossy coat adds shine to the wood but reveals all the mistakes of the craftsman – irregularities, cuts, scratches, etc. You can choose something other than a natural wood color and paint a bed in any color that fits your interior.
Another option is bed upholstery. Here, you need to stock up on fabric, foam, stapler, and staples. You can create a texture or pattern on upholstery using figured nails.
Check all joints and corners for loose ends before you secure entirely the structure.
A bed headboard is a great space for creativity. It is possible to make it shaped, upholstered, uniquely painted, e.g. decoupage. This style of decoration is easy to apply in house conditions, looks like the right design solution, and is pretty cost-effective.
We will need the following:
- White acrylic paint / acrylic paint for shading;
There are special napkins for decoupage which can be purchased at any art shop. However, regular napkins will also work. Primer is needed to ensure that the drawing is as smooth as possible and fits well to the head. It is bought in specialized shops of stationery, but our standards refuse such an expensive option. So let’s take the construction primer.
Put medium-sized load-bearing bars on the support bars (which we attached to the end boards).
The decoupage is carried out on white surfaces, so we use white acrylic paint, which we buy in a construction shop. If you want to get a different shade, mix the white paint with your favorite color.
The easiest way to make the bed look good is to use stain and lacquer that retain the color of the bar, making it brighter.
You can work on the headboard directly on the frame of the future bed or separately from it if the design provides for the possibility of attaching and removing this element. In fasteners to you again will help self-tapping screws.
That’s it! If some design defects are found in the process of operation, it can always be corrected, because you know how the bed is assembled – so it won’t be a problem to find the screeching element. Manufacturing of a bedframe in DIY style, along with product decorating, will not take you more than a week. Moreover, a new bed will please you for many years!
