Makita XFD10R 18V Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless Driver Drill Review

Google top market picks and the Makita brand will be there. Cordless drills are only as good as their batteries so the best way to choose from one brand or another is by paying attention to its power source.

Any drill that charges as quickly as this one does and runs on a Lithium-Ion battery is one you can depend on. Makita craftsmanship, durability and customer support put them at the top and keeps them there.

Why Choose Makita?

Cost, convenience, and freedom to move around safely are three important reasons to trust Makita. Lower operating costs are always a plus and it’s certainly convenient when all you need for power is an outlet for your charger.

Tripping over an air-hose can lead to serious injury and the smaller the workspace, the more a hose can get in the way. The technology in the Makita XFD10R makes working with it a pleasure whether your new to the idea of power tools or have years of experience.

Comfort and Speed All In One

The rubberized handle provides a secure grip on either speed setting. Drills are going to vibrate regardless so being able to grip it securely is very important. The 2-speed transmission on this Makita allows you to work at the pace you are most comfortable with. The drilling and driving options available with this cordless make it the tool of choice for many in the assembly and manufacturing business.

Built-In Equipment Protection

Extreme Protection Technology provides resistance to dust, dampness and other harsh work environments that often cause delays and missed deadlines. With Makita’s use of cutting edge technology that is never an issue with their products. When Makita sells you a drill, you’ll know you’ve bought the best available after the first use.

Well balanced equipment makes it easier for beginners to learn the art of power tools. Ask anyone with experience and they will agree that used incorrectly, power tools can be dangerous. This Makita is a good one to learn with, and then keep around because it lives up to its advertising.

A Little Extra Light Where You Need It

The L.E.D. on this cordless gives off enough of a glow to light up tight, dark areas. When there is no room for a flashlight and you need both hands for the drill, that’s when you will most appreciate this feature. Working in the dark isn’t an option when mistakes cost time or money.

Power Will Be There When You Need It

Downtime is expensive and using this cordless helps avoid it. Powered by a low toxicity Lithium-Ion battery, it doesn’t need to spend as much time sitting in a charger while you wait for it. The best of drills are only as good as their power source. Lithium batteries are the best modern science can offer and have the quickest charge time for their category.

Rapid Charge and Battery Life Extension

Through a chip in the battery, Rapid Optimum Charger helps extend battery life by monitoring temperature, voltage and current during the charging process. As an alternate power source, this drill is compatible with Makita 18V LXT as well as Lithium-Ion. Look for the star symbol on the battery and you’ll know your buying the right one.

Makita Creates “Star Protection”

Star Protection’s computer control not only helps extend battery life, it also helps improve tool performance. The benefits of this are obvious since even the best of batteries have to be replaced eventually but you don’t want to do that any sooner than you need to. This technology enables the tool and the battery to “communicate” during use and protects against overloading, over-discharging and overheating.

The Confidence Of a Good Warranty

With strict quality control and a 3-year warranty, buying Makita is as risk free as you can get. With customer satisfaction as a priority, and a decent warranty you risk nothing by giving it a try. Every unit is tested before it ever leaves the factory, and if you decide to return your drill within 30 days of purchase you will (at Makita’s discretion) either receive a replacement or refund.

Graphics and lights on the charger are indistinct and hard to read.
Chuck appears to be off which causes bits to wobble around during use no matter what size they are.
Batteries charge quickly as advertised but don’t last long.

A Personal Opinion

Cordless drills make good sense when you stop to think how many ways there are to trip around tools, especially air hoses. Makita is a good, solid brand that will work as advertised and with a 3-year warranty, buying this one makes a lot of sense. I haven’t had any problems with mine and highly recommend it for either around the house or use in a professional shop.
