PORTER-CABLE PCC620B 20V MAX Lithium Ion Hammer Drill Review

The Porter-Cable PCC620B Hammer Drill is a lightweight but powerful tool that does not only function as a hammer, but it also functions as a drill and driver. You can get this 3-in-1 tool that should definitely belong to your collection. If you know nothing about tools and you are looking to buy your first one, then this very affordable hammer drill might be the one for you.

If you are planning to purchase this item, you should be a previous owner of other Porter-Cable power tools which are in their 20V MAX System because you will need two lithium ion batteries and this does not include a single battery or a charger.

Our Opinion

Power Drill with High-Performance

Hammer drills can be used for drilling masonry. What makes them an effective tool for masonry is that they produce a pounding force to be able to drill holes through harder materials. The PCC620B is a drill that has a hammering action switch that you can turn on or off according to your needs. The Porter-Cable PCC620B Hammer drill measures 9.4 x 3.5 x 8.5 inches and can deliver 27,200 blows per minute.

The PCC620B may seem like a mini version of a jackhammer because of the hammering action, but this small tool can only put holes through concrete, it will not be able to break those apart. Of course, no one should actually expect it to do a job as big as that because this is obviously a handy tool for your all-around drilling and masonry needs.

Adjustable Speed Settings for More Control

PORTER-CABLE 20V MAX Hammer Drill, Tool Only (PCC620B)Knowing how much power you should apply every time you use your power tools is very important. When using power tools, it is not enough that you know how to push buttons and flip switches because when you have no idea which clutch setting to use you might cause bigger problems for yourself.

The PCC620B has 23 clutch settings for you to choose from. This gives you a lot of control over how much torque or twisting power your tasks will need.

The PCC620B has a two-speed gearbox that gives you the option between 0-400 low-speed setting and 0-1,600 high-speed setting. The low-speed setting can be used for higher torque applications. You can use the PCC620B as a normal drill or as a hammer drill; you just have to flip the switch.

Added Features

The Porter-Cable PCC620B is a cordless hammer drill that uses two 20V lithium ion batteries. Cordless power tools are usually lighter and the 3.7 lbs. weight of the PCC620B with batteries prove that. The lightweight quality of power drills lessens the fatigue in your arms as opposed to using heavier power tools. Less fatigue means that you can finish your tasks quicker because you would not need to take lots of breaks to rest your arms.

The PCC620B also comes with an LED work light and a battery fuel gauge. The LED work light is especially useful for when you need illumination in darker work surfaces. This will lessen the strain in your eyes and will keep you from making errors in your work. The battery fuel gauge will indicate how much charge your battery has left, so you know when to plug in your batteries.

The magnetic bit holder comes in handy for easily changing bits without rummaging back into your toolbox or wherever you keep your bits. The belt clip is very helpful for when you want to attach your hammer drill to your tool belt.

For the Price, It Only Comes as a Bare Tool

Unfortunately for this product, it only comes as a bare tool. It does not come with the needed batteries, charger, or a case. If you have to have this tool, you should at least have other Porter-Cable power tools that use the same 20V lithium ion batteries because, for this hammer drill, you would need two. The lithium ion batteries are what give the tool the power it needs to help you in whatever you may need it for since it is cordless and cannot be connected to a power outlet.

If you like organization, then you should have a case ready to put away this hammer drill. Because it does not come with its own, misplacing the tool is a possibility. Misplaced tools can be a hazard especial to a home with little children.

If you are not a patron of Porter-Cable, but you still want to buy this hammer drill, you may purchase the one that comes with the kit. This is basically the same item with all the characteristics plus the batteries, charger and a carrying case. It is good that Porter-Cable thinks ahead because everyone has different needs.

Comparison with Porter-Cable PCCK607LB

To get a better picture of what you are getting with this model, let’s compare it to another Porter-Cable drill: the PCCK607LB. Both are function as drills and drivers but only the PCC620B has the hammer function. Regardless of the lack of the hammer feature, the PCCK607LB is more expensive than the other. Both use 20V lithium ion batteries and sport two-speed settings, but they differ markedly in power.

As reviewed earlier in this post, the PCC620B has two RPM options: 0-400 and 0-1,600. The contender, however, blasts 0-450 and 0-1,800. However, with the hammer feature, the PCC620B takes back the crown with 27,200 BPMs.
